3 Small Space Solutions for Real Life (+ Mini Vlogs!)

Small spaces are our jam. We love solving a good tiny room challenge, whether that’s an awkward nook, a funny layout or your run-of-the-mill lack of square footage. Thinking vertically, hunting down furniture that pulls double-duty, and playing with color (or lack thereof!) are a handful of ways we’ve made a small space work. Some of you may remember that this blog was born from our own problem solving in our little condo of yore – all 675 sq ft of it!

Last year, we had a fun opportunity to team up with our longtime partner Crate & Barrel. They asked us to create three different scenarios that would provide ideas and inspiration for teeny, tiny living, and we were there for it. Like, quite literally, we were there; we set up three stages in the Crate studios and filmed mini vlogs for a corner home office, an entryway and an eat-in living room. From this, the Small Space Style series was born! We’re so grateful to be a part of it, and we couldn’t be more excited to share this with you today. Let’s go!

1| A Cozy Corner Home Office

For this first scenario, we carved out a home office from an otherwise unused corner of a living room. A small desk, upholstered chair and narrow leaning bookcase give you ample room to set up your (home)work station, but the drawers, trays and baskets help you to hide clutter when not in use. A colorful rug defines the space and keeps it comfortable, and we’re all about adding that finishing touch to make you smile! (After all, it is in your living room!)

2| An Entryway (Where There Is None)

Okay, honestly? We think you could make an entryway out of one foot of wall space and two hooks. Hooks are a small space’s best friend! But what if you have a few extra feet of blank wall? Instead of a leggy console table to drop your keys, consider a hunky credenza with doors. Now you’ve got instant glove, scarf and anything-else-you-want (like board games or shoes or…) storage! Pair that with those coveted hooks, faux stems and a cute clock to keep you on time when you’re running out the door. And don’t forget a large mirror to bounce that light around! Note: The credenza in this video has been discontinued, but this one is very similar.

3| An Eat-In Living Room

We didn’t have a dining room for years, but we did have a coffee table! When you’re short on space, allow that table to serve you more than just a pretty stack of books. Start with the foundation – a durable rug is key if you’ll be eating in the living space! Cloth napkins’ll make you feel fancy (these are a staple in our home), as will a few candles. Choose pillows with a washable cover to double as seating, and keep cozy throws around for when dinner transitions into game night.

I love those gadgets. All can save my space and can do a lotReplyCancel

I love a good entryway dresser too. Like a credenza, it offers lots of storage, with even easier access via drawers. We got ours during a (thankfully very brief) puppy-chews-shoes phase, but love how it hides away keys, gloves, hats, scarves, wallets, sunscreen, last-min makeup, bike tubes, recycling, dog harness, treats, and more. In our space the tall 5-drawer format works really well.ReplyCancel

Oooh, a tall skinny dresser is also a fantastic space saver!ReplyCancel
