Who Makes You Better? (+ Our Clean Floor Go-To!)

This post is in partnership with Bona.

Hands down, we can easily say that the biggest improvement our Tree House has seen to date is the refinishing of the original Douglas fir floors. You might remember that although the floors initially topped our list as one of our favorite items the home had to offer, the more we lived with them, the more we realized they needed quite a bit of polish to truly shine. And so, with a baby on the way and the holidays around the corner, we made the decision to hire out the job. It was well worth every penny (we even broke it down for you in this post!), and the now natural color of the Douglas fir brightens – and perhaps most importantly, unifies – every room.

During the refinishing process, we put our trust in the professionals. We knew we wanted to knock down the red tone of the floors, the color a result of a combination of two things: 1| a prior finish job done sloppily and 2| an oil-based polyurethane that had yellowed over time. We asked if they could use a water-based poly this time around, and could we go with a matte finish, too? The company we hired proudly stated that they’ve been using a water-based commercial grade sealant from Bona for as long as they’ve been in the business, and on the last day of the job, we were happily surprised when they gifted us a Bona spray mop to keep our fresh floors healthy and clean.

It was at this same time that Bona reached out to us, asking if we’d be interested in giving their next generation spray mop a try as a part of their sweet initiative, Wonderful Together. Aside from the eerie timing (suddenly Bona was becoming a recurring topic at the dinner table!), we couldn’t love their messaging more. Just like their spray mop works – get this! – wonderfully together with their suite of cleaning solutions, they asked us, Everyone has someone who makes them better. Who’s yours?

Again, with the timing. (Pass me the tissues!) I was feeling especially joyful at that moment in our lives. (Still am.) Any day, we would be meeting our newest little love. Our weekends were spent at Tree House, a home we feel so fortunate to have in our family, and a place where we see ourselves – and already have been! – making memories with our favorite people. And when I think about who I’m able to share this journey with, the person who never fails to make everything better, there has always only been one answer: Scott.

Teaming up with Bona was an easy yes. Not only are their cleaners safe for our family and pets, but their commitment to air quality and the environment is evident in their non-toxic formulas. The first time using their spray mop couldn’t have been easier; the hardwood floor cleaner cartridge makes a satisfying click! as it locks into place, and we feel good knowing that the soft microfiber pad won’t damage our new-to-us floors.

A quick squeeze of the handle will spray the solution in a fine mist, which I found to be as addictive as it is oddly satisfying. We’re incredibly picky with our household products – opting to use dish soap or vinegar for most things – so we were thrilled to see that Bona left our floors clean clean. No haze. No film.

Lucky for me, Scott is the clean floor enthusiast in our home, and Tree House has been no different! While I prefer to dust, water plants and tidy up, Scott will vacuum, mop and take out the trash (my hero!). If I make dinner, he does the dishes. If he starts the laundry, I’ll swap the loads. And now that we’re learning and falling into a new rhythm in life, we’ve been mindful to maintain the balance. We’re teammates, wonderful together.

Even though the mop part is plastic (you win some you lose some), I also love that the cleaning pads themselves are washable and re-usable. Every bit counts, right?ReplyCancel

Totally. We still don’t have a washer/dryer at Tree House, so we have taken that microfiber cleaning pad back and forth several times to get washed at home!ReplyCancel

I thought you were going to say… “Hands down, we can easily say that the biggest improvement our Tree House has seen to date is… the beautiful baby laying on it’s bed and sitting on it’s couch” He,he. Wishing you many more happy memories with her at Tree House in the years to come :)ReplyCancel

I really don’t mean this to be nasty, but I think it’s worth saying: I find it really off putting when people use their kids in product placements. I know that you need the product partnerships to keep running a free site, that doesn’t bother me. I’ve just stopped following a lot of different blogs over the years (like Oh Happy Day and Cup of Jo) for this exact issue. I find it really gross to see kids (who have no say) be used to sell commercial goods and make money for corporations (even “good” ones). I appreciate that you only partner with places and things you actually use, but this crosses a line for me. Just the two cents of a long-time reader.ReplyCancel

Hi Gary, we are sincerely sorry you feel this way, and we do agree with you to a certain extent but disagree in others. Lucy isn’t being featured here, but she IS a big, huge part of our family now – right alongside Jack, CC and Libby (who love hogging the camera as you know!). Of course she’ll be making appearances from time to time, but this post isn’t about Lucy. Oddly enough, it’s actually about Scott! We hear you, and we welcome your feedback. In any case, we do hope you’ll continue to follow along on our renovation journey, but we wish you the best (truly, from the bottom of our hearts) if our blog is a place where you no longer find joy.ReplyCancel

It’s nice to feel heard. I see your points. I hope that you are able to find a balance that makes your family feel comfortable. I know these are tricky waters, especially for new parents.ReplyCancel
