With a pesky work schedule requiring a few hours of my time tomorrow, holiday travel is largely an impossibility for this Chicago Duo. With my family in Cincinnati and Kim’s in Pittsburgh, it’s more than a couple hours to simply catch up with either. That said, a couple of years ago, a few of our closest friends with similar dilemmas banded together and started an annual tradition which involves the most amazingly inappropriate potluck humanly possible. The different dishes usually outnumber the people in attendance, and that’s without mentioning dessert, adult beverages, and multiple plates of extra-credit cookies.
So how does Grandmother factor into all of this, you ask?
Let’s just say that our gracious hosts, Pete and Rachael, well… one has an affinity for cardigans and pipes, and the other arrives to any occassion with fresh lemon bars and gum in her purse. In addition, they just so happen to cook up the best bacon-wrapped bird (like you wouldn’t believe), so naturally they’ve become the honorary stomping ground for us stranded folk. Fingers crossed our contribution of made-from-scratch green bean casserole and double layer pumpkin pie can match up.
With all we have to look forward to today, we we count our blessings as we’ve been gifted with a whirlwind year of ups, downs, and inbetweens, true friends, and a record number of visits from (actual) family. And so a wish for our darn cool readers: may you all be filled with a dish or two your “grandmother” ever made you crave, a restful day, and face time with your favorite people.
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!
